Comber shop is winner in rural retailer awards

A Comber business has won a major award for its commitment to supporting Northern Ireland’s rural economy.

Pheasants’ Hill Farm Shop has won the best diversification section of the Best Rural Retailer awards organised by the Countryside Alliance Ireland.

The shop diversified from a smallholding during the foot and mouth period and established an outlet for rare breed pork and beef and sell a wide variety of locally fresh produce.

Pheasants’ Hill Farm shop will now go head-to-head with other regional winners in the national final in February.

All the winners were praised by Ronan Gorman, chief executive of Countryside Alliance Ireland.

“Our Best Rural Retailer competition is designed to recognise and reward innovation, excellence and commitment to local produce and local producers,” said Mr Gorman.

“It is also a demonstration of Countryside Alliance Ireland’s commitment to rural businesses and the rural economy. The overall standard of competition was truly remarkable, reflecting the strength and vibrancy of the rural economy.

“We would like to take this opportunity to wish the Northern Ireland regional winners every success in the national finals. We would also commend the many excellent rural businesses who were unsuccessfully nominated for these awards,” he added.
