Christmas poultry shelf life and storage
Fresh poultry has a short shelf life. All the free range poultry we sell has been game hung for up to 10 days prior to plucking and cleaning out to intensify the flavour.
The shelf life of oven ready poultry once it has been cleaned out and dry plucked is as follows:
Fresh turkeys 4 days from cleaning and plucking
Fresh chickens 4 days from cleaning and plucking
Ducks 4 days from cleaning and plucking
Geese 4 days from cleaning and plucking
Partridge, quail, game birds - the shelf life is set by the producer when they pack the product - it varies by product but averages 4-5 days from packing
All the fresh poultry we sell will be labelled by us on receipt and will have a use by date on the label. These products can be stored in a refrigerator running at 2 degrees C until the use by date, and must be cooked before the use by date. These are fresh items which have not been frozen so they can be frozen on receipt and can be stored in a freezer for up to 1 year.
As fresh poultry has a short shelf life, any fresh poultry collected by/or delivered to customers on any date up and including 22nd December should be frozen on receipt and stored frozen until it is thawed for immediate cooking. Fresh poultry collected from our shop on 23rd or 24th December will have a use by date of 26th December, but MUST be stored in a refrigerator at 2 degrees Centigrade until it is cooked or stored in a freezer until you are ready to cook it.
Game birds (partridge, quail, pheasants etc) collected from our shop on 23rd and 24th December will be delivered from our supplier on Thursday 20th December (the last available delivery date) and may not have a shelf life until 25th December. If that is the case we will freeze these birds when we receive them to preserve the shelf life of the products.
